Song: Wolf Alice – ‘Leaving You’

Wolf Alice have taken strides since gifted veteran Joel Amey took up the sticks for them at the beginning of the summer – transforming the band from a sweet acoustic hobby to an astute faction by introducing them to the gold-plated concept of rehearsing. Since this invigorating move, Wolf Alice have grabbed the live scene by the horns, and following a trickle of folk-tinged nuggets, their latest release, ‘Leaving You’, finally discloses their full manifesto of harmony-laden pop to the world.

‘Leaving You’ immediately makes its point of placing the band’s greatest asset up on a pedestal in Ellie Rowsell’s stunning voice. Her vocal prominence is the bowed spine to this tender, country-inspired song, with the instrumentation simply floating around a fantastic central hook: “It’s been a long time coming, and I have been afraid.” The immersive lyrics of a broken romance are tapped by lashings of melodic slide guitar and clustered drums, ultimately creating a warm resemblance to Mazzy Star’s stunning indie anthem ‘Fade Into You’. It’s inspiring to see this project, one that has been so consistently charming in their infancy, push themselves out into the open – they’ve got a lot of heart to share.
